A 25-year-old New Haven woman has been killed in a forklift crash at a Sterling Heights auto supplier plant, according to police.

The body of the woman, whose name has not been released, was at the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office, awaiting an autopsy Monday afternoon, according to staff there.

The woman was driving a forklift at the Metalsa plant at 40117 Mitchell Drive when the machine turned on its side and on top of her, according to an email from Sterling Heights Police Lt. Mario Bastianelli. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened about 12 a.m.

According to its website, Metalsa is a supplier to Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, under its U.S. operating name of FCA. The company, which has its headquarters in Monterrey in Nuevo Leon in northeastern Mexico, supplies, among other things, chassis, fuel tanks and trailer hitches for light duty pickups. The company was recognized with one of 31 supplier of the year awards for FCA in 2020.

Messages seeking comment were left for company officials.

The plant is not represented by the UAW, according to union spokeswoman Sandra Engle.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration has started an investigation, according to Jason Moon, a spokesman for the state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. MIOSHA is a division within the department.
