A hardhat was killed when a 2,000-pound piece of equipment fell on him at a Brooklyn site Monday morning, cops and city officials said.

The 46-year-old construction worker was standing at the site at 1 Java St. in Greenpoint around 9:10 a.m. when part of an excavator arm fell on him, authorities said.

“Our preliminary investigation has determined that workers on the site were in the beginning stages of a 14-story new building project, and were using an excavator to transport pipes from one side of the work site to the other,” said city Department of Buildings Commissioner Eric Ulrich in a statement.

“While one of the workers was using straps to secure pipe posts to the excavator arm, the machinery failed, and a large section of the arm (specifically a lifting attachment) fell on top of the worker.”

The unidentified victim suffered severe body trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The DOB issued a full stop work order at the site while inspectors from the city and Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigate, the Buildings Department said.

“Additional potential enforcement actions are pending the results of those join investigations,” the DOB said.

The 728,000-square-foot site occupies an entire block and “is envisioned as a resilient, mixed-use development including over 800 residential rental units,” according to the profile on the website for its developer, Lendlease.

Thirty percent of the apartments will be designated as “affordable housing,” and the property is also expected to include more than 13,000 square feet of retail space.

Construction is scheduled for completion in 2026.

According to the buildings department, Monday’s incident marked the fifth construction-related fatality in the Big Apple this year.
